Rooibos Tea

Rooibos Tea – A Naturally Caffeine-Free Secret South African Super-Tea

What is Rooibos Tea?

The healing effects of this slim-and-trim diet secret have become legendary.  The nutritious beverage has been enjoyed for generations of South Africans and was reportedly consumed as far back as 1772 by renowned Swedish naturalist Carl Thunberg.

Rooibos (pronounced Roy-bos, meaning "red bush") is mostly grown in a small area in the region of the Western Cape province of South Africa. Rooibos tea is made from needle-like leaves of the Aspalathus linearis (wild rooibos plant) and gets its reddish-brown color from the oxidization process.

Rooibos Tea for Good Health

Rooibos tea is perhaps one of the best kept African health secrets.  The astounding research on this tea shows that it even beats out its tea siblings in many categories.

Rooibos tea contains the powerful antioxidants flavonoids aspalathin and nothofagin. One in vitro study found that aspalathin is even more effective at scavenging free radicals than EGCG, an element found in the more well-known green tea. In addition, rooibos contains essential trace minerals such as iron, potassium, magnesium and phosphorus.

Naturally sweet, rooibos tea appeals to any pallet without the need to add sugar. Dr. Oz stated that replacing one cup of coffee sweetened with sugar and milk every day with a cup of rooibos tea can save up to 7.5 pounds of weight over the course of a year. That’s a lot of fat and calories you can shave off!  We bet you’ll feel the same energy boost from rooibos tea as you would from a cup of coffee, but you can feel good about the added advantage of a host of nutritional benefits.

Because rooibos is naturally caffeine-free and low in tannins, it also has a relaxing effect on the central nervous system, which helps to manage stress, improve sleep, lower blood pressure and support heart health.  Rooibos tea can also be beneficial when applied topically to skin irritations such as eczema, acne, sunburns, diaper rash and itchy skin.  Medical science is only beginning to scratch the surface of the health benefits of this amazing, nutritious red bush tea.
