Go Green with Green Tea

At Zokiva, we feel pretty lucky to have a wealth of superfoods to keep our bodies healthy and strong.  But when it comes to your health, it’s wise to be proactive and not leave it to chance.  This month of luck and all things green, we’re taking a look at some of our favorite green superfoods supplements and teas.  In a way, these treasures from nature are almost like a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow.

Our first lucky green superfood for the month of March is Green Tea.  This well-known antioxidant-rich tea from Asia is not fermented and therefore retains its nutrient content.  And what amazing nutrients they are.  Green Tea contains an abundance of antioxidants including polyphenols, catechins and flavonoids, which help stave off sickness and disease.  Antioxidants are highly regarded as the nutrients that scavenge and combat free radical oxidative stress on cells throughout the body.  Consuming a diet rich in antioxidants, especially the supercharged antioxidants found in Green Tea, helps reduce risk of serious diseases caused by cellular mutations.  Green Tea itself is considered a helpful preventative superfood for many life-threatening diseases.

Polyphenols like those in Green Tea are also wonderful for the heart.  The American Medical Association links Green Tea with lower death rates due to its cardio-protective properties.  Studies indicate that regular consumption of Green Tea proves to reduce bad LDL cholesterol levels and lowers blood pressure levels within a normal range.  Moreover, it helps prevent blood clots and plaque build-up in arteries, which cause heart attacks and strokes.  And, Green Tea strengthens the lining of arteries, which is important for normal blood flow throughout a lifetime.

Green Tea is often hailed as a weight loss superfood for several reasons.  First, it helps rev the metabolism to burn through consumed fat and calories quicker and more efficiently on a regular basis.  Plus, it helps chip away at stored fat too.  Also, Green Tea is naturally caffeinated for extra energy without the jitters, which can support a more active lifestyle.  And it has virtually no calories and zero fat, making it a healthy alternative to energy drinks and juices that pack in the sugar.

Medical experts recommend Green Tea as a supplement to manage the symptoms of diabetes because it is known to stabilize blood sugar levels within a normal range.  Drinking Green Tea with a meal can lower the glucose impact and reduce diabetic blood sugar spikes.  This also aids in weight loss because sugar is metabolized properly and not as likely to be stored as fat.

As if all of these health benefits of Green Tea aren’t lucky enough, Green Tea is a phenomenal age-defying health routine as well.  Drinking Green Tea regularly reduces the effects of aging internally and externally.  Internally, the tremendous nutrients in Green Tea support organs, tissues and cells so they operate efficiently and are less stressed.  Green Tea shows its benefits externally on skin, hair and nails by offering a more radiant, youthful appearance.  Antioxidants help maintain cellular integrity, shape and health, which reduces the signs of aging inside and out.

This March, go green with Green Tea and all of our green superfood treasures from nature!

What is Green Tea

Green Tea is widely considered by nutritionists one of the healthiest drinks on Earth.  It is chock full of supercharged antioxidants that boost the immune system, reduce risk of many diseases, support healthier blood flow and heart function, and may contribute to weight loss, among other health benefits.  With less caffeine than coffee and black tea, and far fewer calories and artificial ingredients than soda, Green Tea is an excellent drink alternative for a healthy lifestyle.

Similar to White tea, Black tea and Oolong tea, Green Tea comes from the Camellia sinensis bush.  But unlike the others, Green Tea is made from the un-oxidized dried leaves of the plant.  This helps lock in a superior antioxidant content.  The most potent antioxidants found in Green Tea are polyphenols, especially catechins like Epigallocatechin-3-gallate or EGCG for short.  All antioxidants help protect and defend cells from free radicals that can damage and mutate cellular DNA.  But polyphenols like EGCG are even more effective at preventing the harmful effects of free radicals.  Of the antioxidants found in Green Tea, over half are these powerful catechins.  This makes Green Tea an incredible disease-preventative beverage.

Beyond preventing diseases caused by cellular mutations, Green Tea supports healthy blood flow and heart function.  Catechins are known to lower harmful cholesterol levels and blood pressure, both of which help blood flow smoothly throughout the body.  As blood flows to-and-from the heart properly, the risk of heart disease, heart attack, stroke and congestive heart failure is reduced, along with other negative side effects of high cholesterol and high blood pressure.  Moreover, blood flowing to the brain helps improve cognition, clarity, memory and alertness.

Of course, better blood flow also supports a more active body too.  By sending oxygen and nutrients throughout the body, energy increases.  With more energy comes motivation, stamina and endurance for physical activity and exercise.  Therefore, Green Tea is often recommended for weight loss.  Although it is not a “magic potion” for losing weight, it can boost the energy required for a healthier lifestyle that leads to weight loss, especially when Green Tea replaces more sugary drinks.  Some evidence also indicates that Green Tea can help manage symptoms of diabetes and reduce the risk of the disease.

Catechins found in Green Tea are responsible for a host of other wonderful health benefits too.  EGCG has shown to relieve pollen allergies by blocking the receptors that cause allergic reactions.  Catechins and other antioxidants found in Green Tea support oral health by improving the quality of teeth and gums, as well as bolstering eye tissue for better eyesight.  Finally, Green Tea has sun-protective qualities as catechins help prevent UV rays from damaging skin cells.
