5 Reasons to Drink Black Tea

Black Tea is a rich and flavorful tea from the Camellia Sinensis plant.  Unlike its sister teas green tea and white tea, black tea is fermented and oxidized.  It can be consumed “straight up” or with a variety of sweet or savory spices to enhance its natural flavor and nutrients.

Black Tea contains a healthy dose of nutrients including powerful antioxidants that give it tremendous health benefits.  Today we’re sharing 5 reasons to drink black tea:

  1. Black Tea is good for your Heart: Due to its high antioxidant content, Black Tea is a fantastic drink to improve heart health.  Studies show that Black Tea may reduce plaque build-up in the arteries known as atherosclerosis.  When plague clogs arteries, risk of heart attack and stroke are increased as blood cannot flow properly to and from the heart and brain.  Black Tea may also support blood vessels and reduce risk of endothelial dysfunction, especially in those with coronary artery disease.  Additionally, Black Tea helps combat high cholesterol levels and high blood pressure within a normal range.
  2. Black Tea is good for Digestion: Tannins and other phyto-chemicals found in Black Tea relax the digestive tract and make regular digestion easier.  It helps reduce swelling in the stomach and intestines that often causes digestive distress or disorders.  It can also relieve diarrhea.
  3. Black Tea can boost the Metabolism: Many people drink black tea for weight management purposes because it is low in sugar, sodium, fat and calories.  Plus it has natural caffeine for an even stimulating effect.  This makes Black Tea a natural alternative to many high-calorie, high-sugar energy drinks.  Drinking Black Tea regularly also revs the metabolism, which may help burn through consumed and stored fat and calories.
  4. Black Tea supports the Immune System: Black Tea is bursting with antioxidants that support stronger cells and an elevated immune system.  Over time, cells are burdened by free radicals and other toxins that enter the body through food consumption, unhealthy habits, sun exposure and other environmental factors.  Antioxidants like the polyphenols found in Black Tea, help combat the damage of free radicals.  Oxidation from free radicals can take its toll all over the body including on the immune system, which weakens the body’s ability to fight off infection and disease.  Also, cognition deteriorates over time due to burdened brain cells.  Antioxidants work to reverse this damage and protect cells for healthier, stronger bodies.
  5. Black Tea is delicious: Many people prefer the taste of Black Tea over green tea or white tea.  The fermentation and oxidation process adds an interesting element to its flavor.  Adding lemon is a great way to increase the cleansing powers of Black Tea.  Also, milk, chocolate, ginger, cinnamon, lemon grass and basil are other common additives to Black Tea to enrich its flavor.

With all of these reasons and more, we hope you enjoy Zokiva’s all-natural Black Tea!

What is Black Tea

Both Black Tea and Green Tea are extremely healthy caffeinated teas from the Camellia Sinesis shrub but they are processed differently to generate unique health benefits.  Black Tea is made when the leaves of the Camellia Sinesis plant are withered, rolled and heated and then fermented before the final heating process.  Therefore, the color appears dark.  It has a rich flavor with a smooth finish.  Most impressively though, Black Tea gives the body energy, strength, clarity and vivacity for a healthy and vibrant day every day.

Black Tea has a number of phenomenal health benefits stemming from its tremendous saturation of polyphenols, a supercharged antioxidant to supports full body health and wellness.  Antioxidants help reverse the natural aging process in the body by neutralizing free radicals that threaten the wellbeing of cells.  With antioxidants supporting our immune system, the body can naturally defend, protect and repair itself against a range of foreign substances that seep into our bodies through our food, water, air, personal care products and other environmental factors.

As an incredible source of polyphenols, Black Tea is a wonderful heart-healthy drink.    Several studies indicate a lowered risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke and other heart-related problems among control groups who drink Black Tea daily.  Part of the reason is that antioxidants and other nutrients in Black Tea support the linings of blood vessels know as the endothelium.  When its process of dilating and constricting is off balance, people develop endothelial dysfunction, which is a large indicator of coronary artery disease and other heart issues.  Additionally, Black Tea helps reduce harmful LDL cholesterol levels that cause plaque blockages in arteries and can lead to heart attack and stroke.

Tannins found in Black Tea can be very soothing to the digestive tract as well.  These and other chemicals help relieve gastric distress by reducing gastrointestinal activity.  Swelling in the digestive tract often leads to digestive disorders but Black Tea can help curb such problems.  Specifically, Black Tea is often prescribed as a solution for diarrhea.

Teas in general are wonderful to help relieve stress due to their abundance of nutrients and the relaxing act of slowly sipping.  Black Tea also has a leg up on stress reduction because it helps lower the stress hormone cortisol and contains the amino acid L-theanine that calms the body and helps you concentrate.  Black Tea contains 2-4% caffeine, which increases full body energy and mental alertness and supports elevated brain function, even in those with degenerative diseases.  Furthermore, hot liquids and especially Black Tea is helpful for people with asthma because it helps open airways.

Bones, teeth and blood also benefit from the amazing nutrients of Black Tea.  The phytochemicals found in Black Tea support stronger bones and teeth, reducing risk of arthritis and tooth decay.  Moreover, Black Tea may actually reduce plaque from bonding to teeth which breeds bacteria and leads to cavities.  Polyphenols help protect teeth against cavity-causing bacteria.  And long term consumption of Black Tea reduces risk of type 2 diabetes by up to 70%.
