What is Turmeric Powder?

You may not know Turmeric by name, but you certainly know it by color.  Turmeric is the spice most commonly used in curry that gives it its yellow tint.  So it is probably no surprise that Turmeric is native to India.  Turmeric is also found in other yellowy foods such as mustard, cheese and butter.  Most people don’t know that this brightly colored spice is full of a powerful active compound called curcumin, which has amazing disease fighting and antioxidant properties.

Curcumin found in Turmeric is responsible for a host of full body benefits.  As an antioxidant, it helps subdue free radicals that cause oxidative damage to cells.  When cells deteriorate, the immune system becomes weak and the body begins to suffer.  Antioxidants like curcumin crush free radicals that attack cells and, extraordinarily, curcumin also bolsters the body’s own antioxidant quotient for a natural immune boost too.  Therefore Turmeric helps prevent and support treatment for a number of chronic diseases and conditions that are caused by internal swelling or cellular mutations.  These include the most life-threatening and life-altering, especially related to the heart and brain.

Heart disease is the world’s number one cause of death.  One major factor that contributes to heart disease is weakened endothelium or lining of blood vessels that maintains many regulatory functions of the heart.  When the endothelium is not working properly, called endothelial dysfunction, it affects blood pressure, blood clotting and many other heart-related issues.  Studies also show that Turmeric reduces the incidence of heart attack in high risk patients.

Additionally, Turmeric is a remarkable superfood for the brain.  First, Turmeric helps block beta-amyloid that causes plaque to build in the brain and leads to degenerative diseases like dementia and Alzheimer’s.  Beyond protecting the brain from age-related deterioration, Turmeric also improves brain function.  Much like cells, neurons in the brain can not only make new connections, but also multiply.  Curcumin in Turmeric supports Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor, a hormone that controls the growth and function of neurons.  By increasing BDNF, curcumin helps improve cognitive function and memory, while also slowing the signs of aging on the brain and reducing depression, both associated with low BDNF.  In fact, curcumin is among the ranks of the most effective anti-depressant drugs and is believed to stimulate the feel good neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine.  Depression itself can impair brain function so treating it naturally is highly beneficial on many levels.

The phenomenal therapeutic and healing qualities of Turmeric extend to other areas of the body too.  Internal swelling can be an exacerbating element for illness and pain inside the body, but curcumin can ease internal swelling.  Turmeric is commonly used to assist in treating arthritis and joint pain.  It also helps painful skin sensations such as rashes, irritation, sores, bruises, bites and infections.  Curcumin soothes chest pain associated with lung infections, bronchitis and colds, as well as nerve issues such as fibromyalgia.
